Field testing the Pard NV007

Whilst we eagerly wait for the woodpigeons to turn their attention to the wheat and barley that is now well established as we head into the summer of 2024, our attention turns to the grass fields that are frantically being mown for hay and silage between the downpours of heavy rain, in what is turning out to be one of the wettest starts to British summertime that I can remember.

As I sit and watch the local farmer mowing and baling his grass crop from the office window at record speeds before the rain stops play again, I head over to the gun cabinet and dust off the Pard NV007 day/night vision add on in preparation for some vermin control on the freshly mown grass fields. It has been a few years since the Pard NV007 was released, however, it is still a fantastic piece of equipment that is still worthy of making its way into your kit bag.

What is a Pard NV007?

Pard are manufacturers of innovative night vision and thermal imaging devices for hunters, shooters, outdoor enthusiasts and security personnel. Pard released their first thermal imaging device for hunters and shooters back in 2013 and after continued success, released their first night vision device not long after in 2015, which became one of the most popular night vision devices on the market. By 2018, Pard released the NV007 night vision add on which exceeded 100,000 annual sales and went on to win "night vision product of the year" at the Great British shooting show awards in 2022.

The Pard NV007 is a night vision add on scope that can be easily fitted to your day time scope, air rifle, rimfire or centrefire up to .308 calibre, enabling you to achieve night time shooting capabilities as well as the ability to record your shooting activities during daylight.

Features

The Pard NV007 has a 0.01lux image sensor which has excellent low light performance. The 1920 x 1080 full HD sensor and 1024 x 768 OLED display delivers excellent imaging with clear, crisp images and bold, distinct details. The NV007 has a built in infrared light which improves night vision capabilities which Pard claims to give you vision out to 350 metres. It has an all glass multi coated lens that has a high degree of colour reproduction, that reduces the appearance of light reflections in the lens that suppresses flares and glares. One other neat feature of the Pard NV007 is its ability to take photos and record video footage.

PARD NV007 Day Mode

The Pard comes complete with a collar that can be fitted to your scope that can remain permanently if required. The Pard unit can then easily be clipped on and off the scope as and when required, allowing you to use the Pard NV007 as a handheld night vision spotter during the night which can then easily be clipped back on to the scope when needed. The Pard has day and night mode enabling the user to use the unit in both conditions. Day mode allows you to record your outings in 1080 full HD whilst the new and improved model, the Pard NV007SP, which can be purchased from Amazon, has an improved 2k sensor. There has been some debate regarding whether your scope needs a parallax in order to use the Pard, however the footage below shows the Pard fitted to a .22LR with a basic Hawke 3-12x50 scope with no parallax adjuster and performed quite well with only some focus issues when the target was at very close range. Whilst using day mode it was noted that the battery life of just one battery was more than adequate enough to last the duration of the entire day. The footage which is stored on an external memory card can easily be removed from the device and inserted into a pc or laptop where your videos and pictures are easily extracted without hassle.

PARD NV007 night mode

The Pard can be fitted to both airguns and rifles up to .308 calibre. The built in IR can pick up eye shine out to 350 metres according to the Pard website and on testing the Pard we found that it is indeed capable of finding a target at these ranges, however, identification is significantly more difficult at longer distances. The in built IR is absolutely perfect for airgun shooting out to 30 - 50 yards, giving you fantastic night vision capabilities and correct identification of your target species, however, if you want to use the Pard for longer distance shooting like foxes for example, we would suggest purchasing an additional IR add on to improve identification and clarity. Perhaps something similar to this Nightfox XB10 IR torch from Amazon.

Battery life of the Pard is definitely something that could be improved in the future. Whilst using the unit in night mode, the in built IR definitely has an impact on battery life and we would suggest that if you have a long night ahead of you, it would be wise to take multiple batteries along with you. Having said that, in day mode the battery life is very good and will generally last you the duration of the day. An additional IR torch should allow you to use the Pard on its lowest IR setting which should prolong battery life. Also it is important to note that if you are using the Pard in conjunction with a thermal spotter, one battery should absolutely last an entire night, where as if you are using the Pard as a night vision spotter, you will almost certainly need additional batteries.
