How to identify Sika deer. Types of UK deer.


 

Types of UK deer

Sika Deer (Cervus nippon)


Sika deer are another type of deer that have been introduced to the UK, having being brought from the far east in the 1800’s. They are not as widespread as Fallow with the majority of the population being found in Scotland and Northern Ireland, however they can be found as far south as Dorset and the New Forest. Sika stags (male) can vary between 80 – 95cm In height at the shoulder and can weigh somewhere in the region of 40 – 70kg. Sika hinds (female) can vary between 70 – 85cm at the shoulder and has a weight range of 30 – 45kg.

Key identifying features of Sika deer:


·       Sika also have a distinct dorsal stripe that runs down the length of the back, however it is less distinct than Fallow.

·       A much shorter tail than Fallow.

·       A distinctive white rump.

·       Sika have very distinctive white metatarsal glands on the hind legs which are an important identifying feature.

·       The antlers will have a maximum of 8 points, generally 4 on each side and the angle of the forward facing point will leave the main antler beam at approximately 45 degrees whereas a Red deer would be 90 degrees.

·       They appear to have short legs in comparison to the size of the body.

·       A distinctive ‘v’ or ‘u’ shaped band on the face with a very ‘bullish’ looking appearance.
