During your hunting and shooting adventures, choosing the right waterproof gear can make even the most harsh conditions a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Get it wrong and not only can it put a downer on the day but you may also put yourself in danger of hypothermia, if for example, you find yourself stranded high up on the moor deerstalking whilst a storm blows in. A good waterproof coat or smock keeps you dry while also allowing you to perform at your best and most importantly, enable you to fully enjoy your shooting adventures. With features like high hydrostatic head ratings, these garments can withstand rain, snow and wind letting you focus on your activity without distractions.
So what should you be looking for in a waterproof shooting smock or jacket?
If you are in the market for a new waterproof shooting coat, the most important features of the garment that you should pay attention to is its waterproof and breathability rating. Not all retailers will include these ratings in their listings so in this instance it would be wise to contact the retailer or brand of the waterproof shooting coat, jacket or smock to ascertain what these ratings are for that specific garment.
What are waterproof ratings and where do you find them?
Waterproof ratings are extremely important for outdoor clothing and will give you an indication of how waterproof and breathable a garment is, which is imperative to how well the garment will perform in harsh weather conditions. The brand, manufacturer or retailer should include these figures in their listings to allow the consumer to make the correct choice whilst looking for a waterproof shooting coat. The technical term for the waterproof rating is Hydrostatic Head or (HH). This is a test performed in a lab that determines the rating of the garment. This figure is usually displayed in mm, for example 5,000mm / 10,000mm / 20,000mm. Typically, the higher the Hydrostatic Head figure, the more waterproof a garment should be.
In the UK, the British standard for a garment to be considered as waterproof should have a HH figure of 1,500mm and above. Below we have put together a brief guide of what you can expect to see whilst searching for a waterproof shooting coat.
Water Resistant - Not considered to be truly waterproof or breathable and only suitable for very light showers. Up to 1,500mm HH.
Waterproof up to 2,000mm HH - Garments with a HH of between 1,500mm and 2,000mm usually also have a breathability rating which is also measured in 'mm', often shown in this format (2,000 / 2,000). A garment with a rating up to 2,000mm HH would be intended for light to moderate rain, perhaps suitable for every day use during activities like dog walking or drier warmer days.
Waterproof up to 5,000mm HH - Garments with a HH between 2 - 5,000mm are considered to have waterproof capabilities more suited to moderate rain. These garments will also have a breathability rating and generally taped seams will be visible. A rating of 5,000mm HH is considered suitable for all weather conditions but if you are wanting added protection from the elements then perhaps a garment with a higher rating would suit.
Waterproof up to 10,000mm HH - Garments with a HH rating of 10,000mm are considered to be highly waterproof suitable for heavy rain. A waterproof shooting coat, smock or jacket with a HH rating of 10,000mm will also have a breathability rating and taped seams. Typically amongst the shooting community we are seeing more and more individuals selecting garments with a HH rating of 10,000mm and above due to the unpredictable British weather conditions.
Waterproof 15,000mm and above HH - Garments with a HH rating of 15,000 and above are intended for heavy sustained rain and are considered to be the most waterproof garments on the market with some waterproof shooting coats having HH ratings of 20,000mm. Garments with a HH rating of 15,000mm and above will also have a breathability rating and taped seams.
So with this information in mind, we have scoured the internet and put together a list of some of the highest rated HH waterproof shooting coats, smocks and jackets available on the market with a HH rating of 15,000mm - 20,000mm. Currently, we could only find waterproof shooting coats with a HH rating of 15,000mm and above from a limited number of brands such as Fortis, Harkila and Swazi.
